Program Overview
The CWE Landfill Assistant placement provides high school students with supervised, real‑world exposure to landfill operations, customer service, administrative processes, and equipment use. Under supervision, students observe daily operations and gain hands‑on experience supporting safe, efficient solid waste management that protects public health and the environment.

- Practice professionalism, teamwork, and accountability.

Under direct supervision, students may:
Learn all aspects of the scale office operations and reports along with communication and money handling. Learn the basics of all equipment and landfill operations.
- Assist landfill operations including waste placement, cover procedures, and site organization.
- Learn how incoming loads are screened for prohibited or hazardous materials.
- Assist with site cleanliness efforts such as litter collection and maintaining safe work areas.
- Assist with container delivery, material handling, and facility operations.
- Learn the purpose and safe operation principles of dozers, loaders, compactors, skid steers, and trucks.
- Assist with equipment cleaning and basic maintenance tasks such as greasing and inspections.
- Assist with minor maintenance procedures and shop operations.
- Assist with inbound scale operations and customer check‑in procedures.
- Greet customers and assist with directing traffic flow at the facility.
- Learn professional communication and conflict resolution techniques.
- Assist with payment handling and customer transaction procedures.
- Quick Books basics and financial tracking.
- Invoicing and billing processes.
- Customer accounts and payment processing.
- Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Data entry and report preparation.
- Spreadsheet updates and record organization.
- Filing, documentation, and operational reporting.
- Assist with cleaning and upkeep of office, shop, and work areas.
- Assist with loading/unloading materials and organizing supplies.
- Practice professional communication with coworkers and the public.
- Develop problem‑solving and multitasking skills.
- Learn workplace safety expectations and documentation practices.
- Demonstrate punctuality, responsibility, and a strong work ethic.
Students work under the supervision of Solid Waste Division personnel. All activities are training focused and aligned with CWE program guidelines and safety standards.
Schedule- Work hours are coordinated with the student’s school schedule and landfill operations.

Minimum Qualifications- Enrollment in the Bakken Area Skills Center CWE Program.
- Willingness to follow safety rules and supervisor direction.
- Strong attendance, dependability, and desire to learn.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Basic computer familiarity and willingness to learn business software.
- Ability to perform light to moderate physical tasks.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) when outside office.
- Follow landfill safety protocols and equipment safety zones.
- Maintain awareness of heavy equipment operations.
- Report hazards or unsafe conditions immediately.
Safety is the highest priority. Students must wear required PPE, including:
- Proper footwear (boots)
- Yellow safety vest
- Long pants
