Job Description

Data Science and Analytics is an ambitious team of Data Scientists and Data Engineers with a unique blend of Business, Scientific, and Machine Learning expertise that seeks to unleash the full potential of Abb Vie’s data assets by bringing technology and insights to the forefront of decision making via fit‑for‑purpose solutions. The Director, Data Science and Analytics is a leadership role responsible for driving vision, strategy, talent management and operations delivery of key planning, feasibility and real‑world data products and insights across Abb Vie’s portfolio.

The Director identifies new capabilities, fosters experimentation, influences cross‑functional leaders, co‑creates strategies with stakeholders, and steers advanced analytics solutions to meet future Clinical Development and R&D needs.

Roles And Responsibilities
  • Manages line‑level people managers and guru data scientists to execute on the Data Science and Analytics strategy.
  • Leads next‑generation technology and processes to enable enterprise data analytics on pace with emerging integrated data sources (operational data, real‑world data, clinical trial data, and other public data sources); monitors emerging trends and assesses impacts on current and future strategies.
  • Coaches, mentors and manages performance of direct reports; develops future leaders in alignment with R&D business needs.
  • Identifies new capabilities and opportunities to drive analytics innovation and value creation for Clinical Trial Feasibility and Start‑up; forms cross‑functional teams to implement new capabilities and crafts functional area strategies while ensuring stakeholder alignment.
  • Influences cross‑functional stakeholders and senior executives to identify opportunities to unleash data and analytics, including advanced ML techniques and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Influences Abb Vie’s enterprise data governance as steward of clinical trials data and other sources used by the team; collaborates with data owners across R&D and related areas.
  • Translates R&D strategy into functional area plans; works with leaders to align on project prioritization and timelines.
  • Fosters innovation and entrepreneurial culture within the team that attracts and retains top talent and creates an environment of continuous learning.
  • Ensures adherence to federal regulations, local regulations, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ICH Guidelines, Abb Vie Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and functional quality standards; stays abreast of evolving regulations and policies related to clinical development.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, analytics, bioinformatics, data science or an equivalent field;
    Master's degree preferred.
  • 8–10+ years of experience enabling novel analytics capabilities across business areas, with 5–6 years of experience leading a team or cross‑functional initiatives.
  • Advanced domain knowledge in clinical trial planning, feasibility, start‑up, and relevant data sources.
  • Expertise in current and emerging technologies (e.g., Data Visualizations, Big Data, AI, Machine Learning, NLP/NLG, Cognitive Analytics, etc.) preferred.
  • Intermediate proficiency with visualization tools such as Spotfire, Tableau or equivalent.
  • Track record of building high‑performing Analytics and Data Science teams; ability to attract, challenge, develop and retain specialized talent in clinical development.
  • Experience with Machine Learning and other advanced analytics techniques preferred.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills; ability to convey analytical and technical concepts in layman's terms.
