Operates and maintains medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer loaders, aggregate spreaders, belt loaders and combination tractors with side mounted mowers. Assists in the operation of a backhoe in the loading of materials needed for maintenance operations, e.g. earth materials, clay, sand and aggregate and clearing fallen trees and debris from roadway and right‑of‑way. Works in the Hot Crew to perform duties using manual labor, in such maintenance task as clearing of right‑of‑ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repair to bridges, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe.
Conducts and documents pre‑trip vehicle/equipment inspections. Reports vehicle and equipment deficiencies and damage to shop. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations (snow/ice, hurricanes, etc.) to include operating medium equipment.
May include being available for extended working hours or 12‑hour shifts. Removes litter, debris and dead animals from roadway and rights‑of‑way. This position requires employee to lift heavy objects. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, motoring public and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Requirement:
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental‑related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
