Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Overview
Assists other mechanics in performing routine maintenance and general repairs to various types of heavy equipment and engines, including transmission work on automatic and standard transmissions.
Responsibilities- Answer service calls in the field.
- Perform vehicle preventive maintenance service (up to and including level III) on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011).
- Troubleshoot vehicle electrical problems on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and use diagnostic equipment and repair manuals to spot and diagnose problems.
- Attend job-related training as scheduled by SCDOT and the supervisor.
- Verify and check fuel, water and lubricating oil levels to ensure engines and equipment are properly serviced.
- Perform small engine repairs on state equipment of simple or medium complexity (e.g., handheld equipment such as chainsaws and weed eaters).
- Perform light brake repairs on state equipment (SCDOT Key Series 001 through 011) and assist in more complex repairs to conventional brake systems. Rebuild carburetors and repair fuel injection systems as needed.
- Make repairs to exhaust systems and replace mufflers and tailpipes as part of routine maintenance.
- Install and repair inclement weather equipment (e.g., snow plows, sand/salt spreaders).
- Assist with the operation of the Maintenance Shop during emergencies and inclement weather (e.g., snow, ice, hurricanes) and be on call for after-hours emergencies.
- May be required to work 12-hour shifts or extended hours.
- Keep the shop clean, organized, and safe.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Six (6) months of work experience directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Work may occur in a large garage and in uncomfortable positions for long periods. May require work outside normal hours, especially during inclement weather or emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outdoor environments in all weather, noise, and oil or grease.
