Overview

The RN in Surgical Observation cares for Phase 2 and post‑op patients from the PACU and OR. These patients are at the med‑surg level of care for surgeries and are planned to be discharged the same day or within 23 hours post‑op. Nurses are responsible for Phase 2 anesthesia recoveries and surgery‑specific care to include surgery‑specific discharge instructions.

Job Summary / Purpose

Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal‑directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

Responsibilities
  • Provide individualized, goal‑directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the nursing process.
  • Deliver safe and effective care and collaborate with the healthcare team to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Perform Phase 2 anesthesia recoveries and manage surgery‑specific care, including discharge instructions.
  • Adhere to scheduled work hours (36 per week) and shift (Nights Monday‑Thursday, 3–12 hour shifts).
Minimum Training and Education
  • Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred.
  • RNs hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree must be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and obtain a BSN within four years of hire or reclassification.
  • Minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required; preoperative or PACU experience required.
  • ACLS certification for pre/post areas required.
Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
  • Licensed as an RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required (AHA or Red Cross).
  • ACLS certification required for pre/post areas.
Physical and Mental Requirements

Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, hold 50 lbs unassisted, lift/transfer patients, maintain vision/hearing, handle stressful situations, work rotating shifts and overtime, work in a latex‑safe environment, and respirator use as needed.
