Overview
Job Title:
Exceptional Children (EC) Bus Monitor. The EC Bus Monitor supports the safe, respectful, and efficient transportation of students with disabilities to and from school. This position works closely with the bus driver, school staff, and transportation department to ensure students physical safety, emotional well-being, and compliance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and transportation plans. The EC Bus Monitor plays a vital role in creating a calm, supportive start and end to each student s school day.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely, including the use of lifts, ramps, seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchairs as needed
- Supervise students during transportation to ensure safety and appropriate behavior
- Provide support to students with physical, medical, emotional, or behavioral needs
- Follow students IEPs, behavior plans, medical alerts, and transportation accommodations
- Use positive behavior supports and de-escalation strategies when needed
- Communicate concerns or incidents promptly to the bus driver and school administration
- Maintain confidentiality of student information at all times
- Assist in emergency procedures and evacuations as trained
- Ensure the bus environment remains calm, respectful, and supportive
- Report safety hazards, equipment issues, or student concerns immediately
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Ability to work effectively with students with disabilities
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
- Experience working with children with special needs
- Training in behavior management, CPI, or de-escalation strategies
- Knowledge of special education practices and terminology
- Ability to lift, assist, or physically support students as required
- Ability to climb bus steps, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
- School bus environment during morning and afternoon routes
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during loading and unloading
- Part-time, school calendar position
- Hours based on bus routes and student needs
- Must meet district and state requirements for background checks and training
