Performs intermediate semiskilled work diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles and heavy equipment, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Landfill/Transfer Supervisor.
- Performs preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment including automobiles, tractors, heavy construction equipment and landscaping equipment.
- Performs motor repair and replacement work; performs repair work on both gas and diesel engines.
- Fabricates replacement parts and metal for repairs to vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains cleanliness of shop area, tools and equipment and exterior building perimeter.
- Performs inspections; maintains records of service and repairs.
- Repairs hydraulic systems on heavy duty equipment.
- Assists with storm cleanup.
- Performs other assigned duties.
- General knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive passenger cars, trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment.
- General knowledge of necessary safety precautions.
- Skill in the use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair work.
- Ability to detect by inspection worn or broken parts.
- Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and to prepare reports.
- Ability to adapt available tools and parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Ability to lift heavy objects.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, vendors, and the public.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Three to five (3-5) years of experience in a related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Valid North Carolina driver's license (Successful completion of In-House CDL Certification required within 6 months of hire)
- Valid CDL minimum of Class B driver’s license recommended. (CDL Class A preferred)
