Overview
Open until filled. Performs responsible work in the areas of fire suppression, law enforcement services to protect the lives and property of the Village. An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, fire education, water and general rescue, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime, law enforcement duties, and other incident response operations. Employees must exercise good judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties.
Work involves frequent public contact which requires good communication skills, tact, and decisiveness. Employees typically work a 24.5 hour shift and participate as part of a team during call responses and in the maintenance of facilities, equipment and apparatus throughout their shift. Work involves responding to calls and patrolling the Village in various motorized and non-motorized apparatus and on foot.
Employees also participate in pre-incident planning, maintenance of records, and training programs. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression, law enforcement, techniques, and equipment. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incident response work, including working both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noises, vibration, moving parts, chemicals, fumes, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters.
The employee is subject to the OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, discussions, monitoring of radio traffic, review of reports and other documentation for adherence to laws and departmental standards.
- Participates in incident response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required; responds and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents.
- Responds to water rescue calls operating boats, jet skis and other related equipment as needed; responds to other rescue calls including high angle, confined space and extrication.
- Drives fire or medical apparatus to incident scenes; properly places apparatus, ensures proper operation, issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response.
- Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition; maintains equipment, re stocks supplies and cleans station facilities.
- Participates in training, pre-planning, education and prevention programs, maintenance and testing of hose, hydrants and pumping apparatus and other related activities.
- Operates mobile and portable two-way radios to receive and transmit information, maintains equipment, weapons and other equipment in standards of good working order.
- Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior; completes calls by determining the true nature of the situation and taking whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
- Investigates traffic accidents; conducts special traffic checkpoints to enforce alcohol, speed, or other laws; operates intoxilizer equipment.
- Performs investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observations, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks, arrests and processes criminal suspects; presents findings in court.
- Issues citations for violation of traffic regulations, serves warrants, apprehends and processes criminal suspects and transports to magistrate and/or County detention facilities.
- Prepares records and reports of work activities.
- Gives information and directions to visitors and the general public; educates public on the prevention and response of, fire, law enforcement related situations, and advises on laws and local ordinances.
- Maintains a working knowledge of the National Incident Management System and implements those strategies and principles during preplanning, training and call response.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards of Public Safety work.
- Working knowledge of modern methods of attacking fire emergencies and of the use and maintenance of firefighting apparatus and equipment.
- Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment. Working knowledge of incident response including response to hazardous materials spills, water and general rescue techniques and emergency medical services.
- Knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the department and Village, especially related to search and seizure, pursuit, and arrest.
