Position: Real Property Appraiser
Location: Manteo

Job Overview

Performs intermediate technical work in determining the taxable value of real property within the County, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Responsibilities
  • Collects, audits, and analyzes field data through building permits.
  • Assists taxpayers in obtaining data concerning location, ownership, assessed value, and other information; resolves new construction and land value complaints.
  • Reviews and resolves value complaints.
  • Studies building plans, information pertaining to sales, and specifications to obtain data regarding size, type of construction and other factors which affect property value.
  • Review and audit all real property within the County including structures, land, other buildings, and land improvements to confirm tax data is correct.
  • Assesses storm damage throughout the County after storms and hurricanes.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of the practices of real estate appraising for assessment purposes.
  • Some knowledge of building and land values; some knowledge of the State laws, charter provisions and County ordinances relating to real property assessing.
  • Ability to analyze factors which tend to influence the value of property and to exercise judgment in the determination of property values.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and associates.
Requirements
  • Associate degree or equivalent.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience in related field or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • NC Real Property Appraiser Certification within two years of hire.
  • Valid driver’s license.
