Overview

This position will function as the Gopher Frog Technician from February through June 2026. This is a part-time seasonal position with hours that vary between 10-20 hours per week, and does not include state benefits. Recommended applicants will be subject to a background check.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, 20 miles south of Wilmington, NC, in Kure Beach, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear River. A living collection of more than 4,000 animals in 93,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages more than 500,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium is surrounded by protected woodland, marsh, and beach. Visitors often plan to stop at sites adjacent to the Aquarium - Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and historic Fort Fisher Civil War Museum.

Description of Work

This position will work under the supervision of both the Aquarium Curator and Assistant Aquarium Curator. All aspects of animal care will be required. Primary responsibilities include Collection of Carolina Gopher Frog eggs, feeding and daily care during all life stages, release/re-introduction of frogs to their natal grounds, monitoring water quality parameters, recognizing symptoms of disease and poor amphibian health, maintaining accurate and complete records of all animal care processes.

All duties will be conducted under the guidance of NCWRC and appropriate permits.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work in harsh conditions experienced while in the field or at the Aquarium.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.

/Management Preferences

Management Prefers
  • Amphibian husbandry experience (preferably propagation experience).
  • Experience with electronic databases.
Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to knowledge, skills, and abilities in area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
