Description

The City of Brevard is looking to hire a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join our team of operators. This position performs a variety of maintenance, operational, and laboratory duties designed to produce safe treatment of wastewater, and disposal of domestic and commercial waste materials. The work includes monitoring the plant's operation through observation, mechanical readings and standard chemical and biological tests and then using this information to make necessary adjustments to the processes.

The position will also assist with plant and facilities maintenance and substantial record keeping of work activities.

During initial training period the schedule for the position will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Upon completion of the training period the schedule will move to a rotating shift that includes work on weekends on a rotational basis.
Examples of Duties
  • Makes regular tours of plant and checks screens, engines, generators, pumps, settling tanks, filters, clarifiers,chlorinators, and other equipment for proper functioning.
  • Monitors plant processes through the computerized operational control (SCADA).
  • Records data from various meters, gauges and dials; logs daily, weekly, and monthly activities.
  • Monitors laboratory results to determine process adjustments including chemical feed changes, wasting sludge,detention time, etc.
  • Performs standard laboratory chemical and biological tests.
  • Performs general preventive and scheduled maintenance; makes routine inspections and makes minor mechanicalrepairs or adjustments; assists on major maintenance and repairs.
  • Regulates and adjusts motors, pumps, blowers, valves and other apparatus to meet changing operating conditions.
  • Performs routine building and grounds maintenance including cleaning, mowing and painting.
  • Collects water and wastewater samples from various sources and stages in the treatment processes.
  • Analyses plant performance and makes chemical feed and other adjustments consistent with supervisoryguidelines; back washes filters.

    Prepares a variety of logs, records, and readings.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications

High School Diploma and some experience in the operation and maintenance of machinery and equipment, preferably ina water or wastewater treatment plant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
For applicants with existing NC Wastewater Certifications, classification and pay will be based on certification levels.

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
Ability to obtain North Carolina Wastewater Operator's Grade I Certificate within 12 months of hire date.
Ability to obtain North Carolina CDL (manual drive) within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of water and/or wastewatertreatment plants.
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and permitting requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Some knowledge of standard laboratory test and procedures used in a water or wastewater treatment plant andof chemistry and mathematic
  • Working knowledge of the use of technology to record data, prepare reports, and monitor and operate plant equipment.
  • Some knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water or wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Ability to operate and use a variety of tools and equipment required for the maintenance of building and grounds.
  • Ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures.
  • Ability to conduct routine laboratory test.
  • Ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read meters, charts, and technical manuals and drawings accurately and to maintain records of shiftoperations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
