Overview
Employees in this class perform a variety of law enforcement duties in the area of patrol, civil paper processing, educational, crime prevention, and community service. Work includes patrolling a geographic region within the County during a shift in a patrol car; preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime; helping victims; transporting inmates; performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; testifying in court;
and executing related assignments. Duties may also include serving criminal court papers such as warrants and subpoenas, as well as receiving and serving civil process papers such as civil summons and executions. Work may also involve responding to crime scene calls to secure the scene and collect evidence. Depending upon the assignment, employees may administer the D.A.R.E. Program within County schools;
perform duties of a K-9 officer; serve as the evidence custodian; or serve as Court Bailiff. Work is performed with judgment, initiative, and calm control, often under direction from the Deputy Sheriff Corporal, and involves frequent public contact requiring tact, firmness, and decisiveness. The work is performed under departmental policy and state and federal law, with direction from supervisory staff.
It can involve stressful emergency conditions and personal hazards. The employee is evaluated through observation, review of reports, and discussion about how incidents were handled.
- Patrol a geographic region to detect and deter crime; respond to calls for assistance; conduct preliminary investigations; detect unusual conditions; and may maintain surveillance for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.
- Respond to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud or disruptive behavior, and other needs; determine the true nature of the situation and take appropriate legal or persuasive action.
- Serve criminal papers such as warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, orders of forfeiture, and commitment papers; locate and explain the papers to recipients; make arrests when necessary.
- Serve civil process papers such as civil summonses, magistrate summonses, notices of rights, subpoenas, and court orders related to child support, child custody, and domestic violence; remain on scene as needed until civil process is completed.
- Perform investigations of accidents and crimes, secure crime scenes, gather physical evidence, and serve as the evidence custodian; arrest and process suspects as assigned.
- Prepare case files and materials for court and attend court to testify or provide evidence as needed.
- Advise the public on laws and local ordinances; provide information to the general public.
- Conduct commercial and residential property security checks.
- Regulate and direct vehicular traffic at busy times or during malfunctions; maintain order at public gatherings.
- Prepare lesson plans, conduct D.A.R.E. lessons, and coordinate public interest events; may serve as School Resource Officer and provide security in school environments.
- May serve as a K-9 officer, respond to canine search requests, and train and care for the canine.
- May serve as Court Bailiff, providing courtroom security, calling court into session, and coordinating with juries and inmate transfers.
- Transport inmates as needed.
- Perform related duties as required and participate in special duties, critical incident activities, and disaster response.
- Working knowledge of the operations, functions, and procedures of the Sheriff’s Office.
- Working knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and policies relating to arrest, search and seizure, and traffic control.
- Working knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment.
- Working knowledge of criminal and civil papers and the practices involved in serving them.
- Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures.
- Working knowledge of the County geographic layout, including roads and landmarks.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment; ability to apply self-defense tactics.
