the Job

UNC Health is seeking a Recreational Therapist to join its Youth Behavioral Health (YBH) team in Butner, North Carolina. The Recreational Therapist will be responsible for providing a full range of recreational therapy services to children and adolescents with mental health diagnoses, dual diagnoses, substance misuse, and complex behaviors.

Responsibilities
  • Assess patients’ needs, interests, and abilities
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans
  • Provide therapeutic interventions, such as group and individual therapy, games, and activities
  • Document patients’ progress and response to treatment
  • Collaborate with other members of the treatment team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurses
  • Participate in professional development activities
  • Serve as a clinical educator for practicum and intern recreational therapy students
  • Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or Recreational Therapy, which includes an internship
  • Licensed as a Recreational Therapist by the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure (NCBRTL)
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC)
  • Experience working with children and adolescents with mental health issues
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a hospital-based mental health setting
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, autism, and dual diagnosis
  • Additional training and/or certifications in evidence-based practices with these populations
