Pay Range: $23.65 - $35.50

This position provides emergency care to patients according to treatment protocols in accordance with NCCEP protocols set forth by the N.C. Office of EMS (NCOEMS). It involves serving as a care team member in the Emergency Department in accordance with the Scope of Practice set forth by the Non-Traditional Practice Setting Agreement with N.C. Office of EMS and the Medical Center/hospital.

Serves patients in the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric age categories.

Responsibilities
  • Essential functions include delivering patient/family centered care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs.
  • Rapid evaluation of life threatening emergencies and implementation of prescribed therapies within scope of practice.
  • Collaborate with nursing and medical teams to establish treatment goals and maintain a safe, therapeutic environment.
  • Promote privacy, professionalism, and respectful interactions; utilize technology and equipment to enhance patient and staff safety.
  • Communicate effectively to share information across the continuum of care as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Participate in a professional practice model, adhere to standards of care, and engage in peer review and professional development.
  • Advocate for patients throughout the continuum of care, including community settings.
  • Identify clinical priorities and initiate actions to improve patient outcomes.
  • Administer medications and treatments within scope as defined by NCOEMS, under physician orders.
  • Perform and maintain competency for point-of-care testing and ensure compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Document medications, treatments, and patient re-assessments in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and support evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient flow in the Emergency Department.
Qualifications
  • Education/

    Experience:

    Paramedic certification from an accredited program, or an Associate's of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in paramedic studies or equivalent. Three years of Emergency Service experience preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and applicable state-OEMS EMT-P certification required. ACLS or PALS may be required within one year in select areas. Critical care certificate or national registry paramedic preferred. Maintains certification through an approved state-OEMS education provider.
Skills/Qualifications (continued)
  • Ability to provide direct and indirect patient care; strong oral and written communication; ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to assess and respond to verbal and nonverbal communication across age groups (neonates to geriatrics).
  • Builds rapport with hospital personnel, providers, patients, and visitors.
  • Physical capacity to push, lift, and position patients and equipment; computer skills for electronic documentation.
  • Ability to perform duties in accordance with applicable laws and hospital policies.
Work Environment
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations; subject to highly stressful and crowded conditions.
  • Moderate noise; subject to interruptions; required to wear PPE.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing as applicable.
  • Lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 100 lbs as needed with assistance.
