Department Head, Emergency Medical Science and Healthcare Simulation

Responsibilities
  • Develop educational programs to achieve the institution's objectives and to meet the standards established by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP) and the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services.
  • Develop a Healthcare Simulation Technology program to achieve the institution's objectives.
  • Guide faculty in the development of the Emergency Medical Sciences and Healthcare Simulation curriculum design to maintain currency and rigor and to fully implement and evaluate student learning outcomes and overall program outcomes.
  • Analyze, evaluate, revise and maintain an educational program consistent with current EMS trends, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare and submit to the Dean of Health Sciences departmental goals and prioritized budget requests annually with faculty input.
  • Validate faculty certifications and credentials annually.
  • Monitor the departmental budget; review requisitions for equipment, supplies and materials needed for the department.
  • Maintain and update affiliation agreements and processes to ensure all students and faculty meet credentialing requirements for each agency assigned.
  • Devise and direct maintenance of a record system of clinical experience, exits and reentries, grades, and general background information for each student.
  • Collaborate with student services staff, the EMS department and Healthcare Simulation faculty to develop and implement admission standards for EMS and Healthcare Simulation students.
  • Assist with orientation and registration of students in both programs.
  • Collaborate with the Clinical Coordinator and with the clinical agencies to ensure appropriate clinical placement for all students.
  • Collaborate with instructors assigned, to ensure currency and maintenance of lab equipment and adequacy of supplies.
  • Hold periodic conferences with instructors and students to interpret objectives and policies of the school, indicate changes in methods or procedures, and coordinate all phases of the educational process.
  • Schedule regular office hours for consultation and academic counseling with students.
  • Schedule and host advisory board meetings at least two times per year.
  • Prepare periodic reports concerning department activities, progress and achievement of students.
  • Conduct yearly evaluation of faculty members using input from students, peers, and faculty self‑evaluations.
  • Interview faculty, recommend appointment and termination of employment of faculty members and share in responsibility for orientation of new faculty through assignment of mentors.
  • Ensure new faculty participates in required college‑wide and departmental orientation.
  • Serve as a member of faculty committees, conduct scheduled faculty meetings, and participate in professional meetings and community activities.
  • Complete annual applied benchmark projects on an individual or group basis.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Proficiency in curriculum design, program administration, evaluation, instruction, and academic advising.
  • Ability to perform normal duties with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency in communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sincere interest in helping students reach their maximum potential.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • North Carolina Office of EMS Paramedic certification or National Registry Paramedic certification.
  • North Carolina credentialed Level II EMS Instructor at the Paramedic level.
  • Five years field experience as a paramedic in the delivery of out‑of‑hospital emergency care.
  • Two years experience as an instructor in an EMS program at a post‑secondary institution.
  • Supervisory and leadership experience.
  • Provide unofficial transcripts and copies of required licenses and/or certifications with the online application or to Human Resources immediately upon completion. Failure to provide these documents may result in incomplete consideration.
Preferences
  • Master's degree.
  • Five years supervisory and leadership experience.
