Education & Experience

Paramedic certification from an accredited program, or an Associate’s of Applied Science degree in paramedic studies or equivalent. Three years of emergency service experience preferred.

Licensure, Certification, and Registration

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and applicable state-OEMS certification as EMT-P required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required within one year in select areas. Critical care certificate or national registry paramedic preferred. Must maintain certification through an approved state-OEMS education provider.

Essential Functions
  • Provides patient/family centered care focusing on physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs.
  • Rapidly evaluates life‑threatening emergencies and implements therapies within scope of practice.
  • Collaborates with nursing and medical staff to establish treatment goals.
  • Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment with patient privacy and respectful behavior.
  • Utilizes and promotes technology and equipment to enhance safety of patients and staff.
  • Communicates effectively to promote information sharing throughout the continuum of care.
  • Participates in professional practice models, shared governance, peer review, and continuous professional development.
  • Acts as a patient advocate throughout the care continuum, including in the community.
  • Identifies clinical priorities and initiates actions to improve patient outcomes.
  • Uses medications, treatments, and protocols within scope of practice under physician orders.
  • Performs and maintains competency for point‑of‑care testing per WFBH policies and regulations.
  • Documents medication and treatment, re‑assessment, and care in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Demonstrates high‑level teamwork with the Emergency Department Care team.
  • Supports evidence‑based practice, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Facilitates optimal patient flow and ensures safety and security of all patients.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Ability to provide direct and indirect patient care.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to evaluate and respond appropriately to verbal and nonverbal communication from patients at all stages of development.
  • Builds rapport with hospital personnel, providers, patients, and visitors.
  • Ability to move stretchers, wheelchairs, carts, and equipment.
  • Clear, concise, and professional communication via telephone and automation devices.
  • Ability to lift and position patients of all weights and heights using assistive devices or personnel.
  • Computer skills for electronic documentation of patient care.
  • Performs duties in accordance with applicable state and federal laws, local ordinances, policies, and protocols.
Work Environment
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations.
  • Subject to highly stressful and crowded conditions.
  • Moderate noise environment.
  • Subject to many interruptions.
  • Handles absentee replacement on short notice.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. maximum and perform routine patient handling tasks, including standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and using assistive equipment. Requires full hearing and vision for patient interaction.
