Position: Code Enforcement Officer (Part Time)
Location: Marion

McDowell County is seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to serve as a Part‑Time Code Enforcement Officer. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring compliance with land development and environmental regulations and ordinances within the county. The Code Enforcement Officer will focus on monitoring and enforcing land development and environmental laws. This is a part-time position requiring approximately 19 hours per week.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular patrols and field inspections addressing complaints of possible violations of land development and illegal solid waste ordinances.
  • Investigate violations and citizen complaints: exercise appropriate judgement in prioritizing calls; investigate and resolve problems; provide information to the public regarding regulations and violations.
  • Document observations, gather evidence, and prepare detailed reports on findings and enforcement actions taken.
  • Issue citations, warnings, and notices of violation as appropriate, ensuring adherence to procedural and legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with other county departments, law enforcement agencies, and environmental organizations to coordinate enforcement efforts and promote compliance.
  • Educate the public on environmental regulations, best practices for waste management, and the importance of environmental stewardship.
  • Participate in training sessions and workshops to stay updated on relevant environmental laws, regulations, and enforcement techniques.
  • Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent required.
    • Prior experience in environmental enforcement, law enforcement, code enforcement, or a related field is highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations and ordinances.
    • Ability to interpret maps, plans, and legal documents related to environmental and planning ordinances.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to interact effectively with the public, officials, and other stakeholders.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
    • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
    Physical Requirements
    • Ability to perform outdoor work in various weather conditions.
    • Ability to walk, stand, and climb terrain during inspections.
