Supervises the activities of a patrol and/or support services division; responsible for a shift and serves in a troubleshooting, advisory, and supervisor capacity; performs law enforcement duties as required.
HIRING RANGE: $79,361.61 - $
Salary commensurate with experience.

- Ensures adherence to departmental policies and directives; provides training and evaluation of personnel regarding matters of policy, procedure and conduct, and enforces policy consistent with department and Town processes.
- Conducts performance coaching and evaluation; ensures safety of work habits and environment; applies leadership skills of motivation, communication, conflict resolution, employee development, and team building; recommends necessary disciplinary actions.
- Supervises the activities of assigned shift personnel; ensures adequate staffing, timely response to incidents; completion of preliminary investigations and case management; enforcement of motor vehicle laws; processing of evidence; completion of reports, adherence to policies and procedures; observes field performance and court testimony, provides feedback and ensures unit goal achievement.
- Conducts inspections to ensure subordinate personnel are prepared for duty and maintaining department property in accordance with established policy.
- Prepares a variety of records and reports; submits approves leave requests.
- Assists with on-the-job training of new employees; recommends training needs of staff.
- Provides feedback on equipment and supply needs for the shift.
- Performs law enforcement and public safety activities as required.
- Maintains currency of employment regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, applicable laws, and legislation.
- Promotes and supports the overall mission of the town by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with public and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
- Acts as Watch Commander in the absence of the Patrol Lieutenant.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma/GED supplemented by coursework in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, or a closely related field.
- A minimum of five (5) years of Officer level experience in a municipal police department.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- Driver’s license.
- Intermediate Law Enforcement certification awarded by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
- Advanced supervisory/leadership training in Criminal Justice or related field.
- Principles and practices of employee supervision, including selection, work planning, organization, performance review and evaluation, and employee training and discipline.
- Principles and practices of law enforcement operations in an urban area.
- Administrative principles and practices, including goal setting, program development, implementation and evaluation.
- Principles and practices of developing teams, motivating employees and managing in a team environment.
- Principles and practices of effective interrogation.
- Criminal investigation principles, practices and techniques.
- Weaponry and associated safety practices.
- Principles, practices, and techniques of police services training and development.
- Applicable laws, regulations, ordinances and codes.
- Computer applications related to the work.
- Correct business English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Records management principles and practices.
- Social, political, economic, environmental and related issues influencing local government functions and activities.
