Summary

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in calculating, posting, and verifying duties to obtain and record financial data for use in maintaining accounting and statistical records by performing the following duties. Will manage processes, software, develop standards, accounting, corporate finance, analyze information, develop budgets and staff performance management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Analysis
  • Work closely with the CFO and senior management team to provide timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Perform detailed expense, job cost, and project margin analysis.
  • Analyze monthly percent-of-completion (WIP) schedules and provide profitability insights.
  • Assist CFO with annual budgets, forecasts, and financial modeling.
  • Prepare special financial reports and trend analyses to support strategic decisions.
  • Guide financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing accounting policies and procedures.
  • Protect company assets by maintaining strong internal controls.
Accounting Operations Leadership
  • Oversee the Accounting Manager, who is responsible for daily accounting operations including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll.
  • Maintain integrity of the general ledger.
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Review and approve disbursement checks and cash management activity.
  • Lead month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Generate accurate monthly financial statements and management reports.
  • Coordinate with external CPA firm for annual financial review, 401(k) audit, and proofs of cash.
  • Perform year-end closing, including payroll review, and submit work papers to CPA.
Construction Accounting & Compliance
  • Manage and review monthly percent-of-completion (WIP) schedules.
  • Oversee standard construction documentation including:
    • Requisition s
    • Subcontracts
    • Change orders
    • Lien waivers
    • AIA billing forms
  • Ensure subcontractor and vendor certificates of insurance are properly maintained.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual state and federal tax filings.
  • Reconcile 401(k) plan and manage annual audit and required filings.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Leadership & Staff Development
  • Provide leadership and development support to the Accounting Manager and finance team.
  • Assist with recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training accounting staff.
  • Coach and evaluate team performance.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through continuing education.
Contract & Vendor Oversight
  • Negotiate contracts with subcontractors, vendors, and temporary agencies to protect company interests and add value.
  • Provide general office and operational financial support as needed.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of financial information.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Indirectly supervises 10 to 12 employees in the Accounting Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Required

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or mechanical contracting.
  • Strong knowledge of percent-of-completion and job cost accounting.
  • Experience managing accounting leadership (e.g., Accounting Manager).
  • Experience working with CPA firms and audits.
  • Advanced Excel proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred
  • CPA designation.
  • Financial analyst background with experience in:
    • Budgeting and forecasting
    • Variance analysis
    • Cash flow modeling
    • Scenario planning
  • Experience in mechanical, HVAC, or specialty subcontractor environments.
  • Experience working in an ESOP-owned company, including familiarity with ESOP accounting, annual valuation support, repurchase obligation forecasting, and coordination with third-party administrators and trustees.
  • Power BI Proficiency
