Clinical Assistant Professor – Undergraduate Nursing Position Overview
Winston‑Salem State University’s Division of Nursing is a leader in nursing education, committed to providing diverse populations with a transformative experience grounded in HBCU traditions. The division offers programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels, preparing graduates to be leaders in health equity and culturally responsive care.
This 12‑month position is a rank of Clinical Instructor/Assistant Professor of Nursing in the School of Health Sciences Division of Nursing, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will teach primarily undergraduate nursing courses in adult health, mental health, and maternity‑newborn, offered in traditional and accelerated formats. The role also involves serving as an advisor, mentor, and coach to students, participating in departmental, school, and university service, and engaging in community‑related service in Winston‑Salem and Forsyth County.

Requirements and PreferencesApplicants must demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching of nursing theory and clinical practice to undergraduate students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and the ability to leverage technology to engage students. The candidate will also mentor and support students in study abroad and community service learning, and participate in interdisciplinary teaching and collaborative learning.
- Candidates must have a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
- Candidates must hold a current unrestricted license as a registered nurse in North Carolina or be eligible to obtain one.
- Must have at least two years of clinical nursing and one calendar year of teaching experience, including hybrid or online, in a college or university setting.
- Must demonstrate the ability to leverage various technologies that engage students in the learning process.
- Must be proficient in NCLEX blueprint test construction, statistical analysis, and instructional reinforcement to achieve learning outcomes.
- Candidates must be a clinical expert with effective communication and assessment skills.
- Must provide evidence of ability to mentor and support undergraduate students in study abroad, internship, or community service learning.
Preferred: at least three years of clinical nursing and at least one year of teaching experience in a higher‑education setting.
Primary Responsibilities and DutiesGeneral duties include coordinating learning activities, developing course content, and assisting students in adult health nursing theory and practicum. Specific duties include teaching at least 12 semester hours in classroom and clinical settings, participating in program planning and curriculum development, academic advisement, and fostering a student‑centered environment.
Teaching and Advising- Teach graduate and professional nursing courses face‑to‑face, hybrid, or online, and communicate with students to monitor progress and promote success.
- Develop detailed course syllabi before the first class, deliver each section, create relevant activities, assess assignments, provide timely feedback, and evaluate performance.
- Hold weekly office hours, meet regularly with course coordinators and department chairs, and attend departmental, school, and university meetings.
- Advise and mentor graduate and professional students on academic matters and foster a student‑centered learning environment.
- Meet with the course coordinator, area coordinator, and chairperson regularly.
- Serve on departmental‑level committees.
- Serve on school and university‑level committees.
- Maintain membership in discipline‑specific professional organizations.
- Serve on community‑oriented committees, boards, and commissions related to nursing or healthcare.
