Location: Spruce Pine

Serves to support the mission of the College and Student Services by actively recruiting, admitting, advising, and offering on-going support to students enrolled in high school. Assists students with the MCC Pathway and the transition from high school to post-secondary study m pre-admission to post-graduation, Student Services provides individualized, inclusive, student-centered programming beyond the classroom to bridge the gap between students’ goals and achievement.

The location of this position is Avery County High School

This position will remain open until filled. For best consideration application should be submitted by 8/31/2025.

PRIMARY TASKS
  • Collaborate with the high school and Mayland Community College to ensure coordination of high school and college schedules that allow access to required coursework.
  • Collaborate with Principal and Counselors on recruitment of new students.
  • Assist in the coordination of services for high school students with IEPs and 504s with MCC Counseling and Disability Services Department.
  • Communicate with MCC Faculty about high school calendar changes, such as inclement weather closings, standardized testing date, etc. to ensure that students are supported as much as possible when they cannot attend class.
  • Work closely with high school and MCC faculty and staff to meet students’ needs and monitor students’ progress.
  • Ensure compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures of MCC, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies.
  • Report enrollment data, end of semester grades, and hours of credit back to high schools for high school transcripts.
ACADEMIC ADVISING
  • Assist students with application process by identifying needs and completing appropriate forms.
  • Advise high school students for college courses using the CCP guidelines.
  • Determine placement for high school students, including scheduling and administering placement test when needed.
  • Maintain and update high school student plan for pathway completion.
  • Consult with internal high school staff and gather needed data for pathway changes and eligibility for early entrance pathways, per state guidelines. Including AIG documentation, Career Coach, and Bachelor Degree Plans.
RETENTION
  • Counsel students who have been placed on Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension and create an Academic Action Plan.
  • Contact students early in the semester to check on progress and comfort level with college courses.
  • Complete mid-term progress checks on all enrolled students (mid-term contact) and provide this information to principals and counselors.
  • Identify students from Advising Caseload who need to be monitored and supported more closely. These students will be added to an At-Risk Caseload.
  • Respond to Early Alerts submitted by Faculty and provide an initial intervention.
  • Advise students who are dropping classes or changing majors. Complete the Career Couch assessment with students changing majors and document career counseling.
  • Participate in student engagement events that aid in retention.
RECRUITMENT
  • Participate in high school and community activities that promote the College’s programs and the transition from high school to MCC, including all appropriate high school events.
  • Assist with recruiting events for area schools, including campus visits and opportunities for MCC Faculty to visit the high school.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Participate in planning of registration, graduation, and enrollment management efforts.
  • Provide support during the curriculum commencement ceremony including assisting with set up and execution of the event.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through reading professional publications and attending workshops and conferences as appropriate.
  • Provide input and present ideas for marketing efforts and publications, which may include creating, designing, proofing, and printing materials.
  • Maintain cross-training with other Student Success Advisors and other Student Services staff.
  • Serve on various college and high school committees
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Various promotions including posters, letters, AHS Facebook, phone calls and emails throughout the year.
