This is an 11-month temporary position with a maximum of 40 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits.
DNCR does not engage in dual employment for temporary positions; if you are currently employed with another State agency, State university, or the NC National Guard and intend to remain employed with that entity, you may not be considered for temporary work with DNCR.

The mission of the North Carolina Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of our aquatic environments. This mission is achieved by attracting, retaining, and developing a world class team of professionals; providing visitors with outstanding exhibits, experiences, and customer service; practicing sustainability, internal customer service and fiscal responsibility; and working to save and restore aquatic species and habitats.
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is located 6 miles from Morehead City, NC, on Bogue Banks, and sits adjacent to Bogue Sound. A living collection of over 4,500 animals in 90,000 square feet of exhibit space attracts and engages over 400,000 visitors each year. The Aquarium location is in the Roosevelt Natural Area, a state park of maritime forest and wetland ecosystems.
Descriptionof Work:
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores seeks talented, enthusiastic instructors to assist with a wide range of programs and activities. The Special Activities branch of the Aquarium’s Education Department offers fee-based programs and activities to school groups and the general public, both on-site and virtually. This position will be responsible for leading paid activities and assisting with interpretive interaction with guests at the Aquarium as needed.
This includes, but is not limited to: birthday parties, behind the scenes tours, live animal presentations, touch pool activities, camps, and outdoor recreation programs. Work hours vary each week based on programming and educational needs and may range from 16 to 32 hours a week. Position requires a flexible work schedule that may include long workdays, some outdoors in summer heat for hours at a time.
Position requires weekdays, weekends, and some nights. Applicants must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid NC driver's license, be able to lift 40 lbs., and be comfortable handling live animals.
- Demonstrated experience with public speaking and presentation skills.
- Experience with database record keeping.
- Knowledge and understanding of coastal ecology and general biology.
Education and Experience:
High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and one year of experience as related to the knowledge, skills, and abilities in the area of assignment; or…
