Job Description Summary

Adjunct instructors will instruct within their area of expertise using college level measures to determine student success. Adjunct instructors will apply the tenets of critical thinking to subject matter and will demonstrate flexibility in teaching across educational mediums (online, information highway, etc.) as needed. Adjunct instructors will participate in professional development activities as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching
    • Responsible for developing Sustainable Agriculture related curricula
    • Identifying tools, materials, & supplies needed for the program and submitting purchase orders
    • Teaching safety, textbook & hands‑on Agriculture skills to students
    • Follow policies & procedures of Surry Community College
    • Report to the Division Chair for Sciences
    • Attend meetings and training required by the College
    • Conducting in a professional manner all class hours as assigned
    • Creating correct, professional syllabi
    • Creating, administering, and accurately assessing substantive assignments and activities that support the college’s general education requirements and Quality Enhancement Plan
    • Meeting classes on time and for the full duration of the published class time
    • Notifying the Division Chair as soon as possible in the event of illness
    • Supporting and following college policies and procedures
    • Assuming reasonable responsibility for security, maintenance, and inventory of assigned equipment and supplies
    • Preparing and submitting accurate and precise pay and attendance rosters, student grades, and other assigned documents when due
    • Assisting in the selection of textbooks and maintaining updated text information
    • Referring weak students for tutoring, consulting with students, and facilitating help or review sessions outside of class time
  • Professional Development
    • Participating in required, college-sponsored professional development activities as Safety Training and IT Usage Orientation
  • Maintain a Clean and Safe Work Area

Required Qualifications

Associate in Applied Science Degree in an Agriculture or related field, or Biology field, and significant Agriculture experience. Strong communication & organizational skills. Ability to work with administration, faculty, and staff of the college as well as the students.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate in Applied Science Degree, or higher, in a Horticulture or other Agriculture related field, or Biology field, and significant Agriculture experience. Experience with a range of agricultural production systems. Experience instructing adult learners. Experience with instructional technology.
