GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Performs intermediate skilled clerical work in the public library; plays a key role in implementing programs and services designed for young adults (teens) and adults; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Library Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Plan, implement, and promote engaging library programs and services for young adults (teens) and adults, and supporting community outreach initiatives.
- Assist with clerical duties such as operating the circulation desk; checking books, magazines, videos, and other materials in and out of the library; responding to questions from patrons; assisting library patrons.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing programs for young adults and adults, including but not limited to book clubs, workshops, author talks, and other events.
- Help design and promote engaging activities that encourage library use among teens and adults.
- Set up and take down materials and equipment for programs and events.
- Collaborate with community organizations and local schools to promote programs and services.
- Assist in maintaining the young adult and adult collections by shelving, organizing, and updating materials.
- Assist in weeding and recommending materials for acquisition to keep collections relevant and appealing to target audiences.
- Actively participate in outreach efforts by visiting schools, community groups, and local events to promote library services.
- Help create promotional materials, including flyers, newsletters, and social media content to market programs and services to young adults and adults.
- Assist patrons in accessing and using library technologies, including eBooks, databases, and public computers.
- Provide basic instruction on the use of digital resources, such as downloading eBooks or accessing online research databases.
- Conduct shelf reading to ensure that materials are in the correct order.
- Maintain the general cleanliness and order of library areas, including straightening bookshelves, tables, and public areas.
- Maintain accurate records of program attendance, participant feedback, and outreach efforts.
- Respond to questions and inquiries submitted via WCML’s website or the WCGOV’s website.
- Work at the circulation desk checking materials in and out of the library; enter data into computer system.
- Assist with research, cataloguing, or other services and programs as assigned.
- Assist patrons with locating library materials; assist patrons in use of copier and computer.
- Register new library patrons and enter data into computer; process library cards.
- Assist patrons with the use of public computers, digital resources, and other library technologies.
- Offer reader’s advisory services by recommending books and resources based on patron interests.
- Order requested books on NC Cardinal and maintain inter‑library loan files.
- Check NC Cardinal for pending loans.
- Assist with homebound delivery services when necessary.
- Enter inter‑library loan data into computer system; print out inter‑library loan requests; enter book reserves, holds and loans into computer system.
- Assist with balancing revenues daily.
- Perform related tasks as required.
General knowledge of library routine and procedures; knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring some detail; skill in the use of office and data entry equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and library patrons. The role requires strong communication skills, creativity, and the ability to work with diverse audiences.
EDUCATIONAND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and moderate experience working in a library.
