Description
Employees in this class are responsible for the total process of determining/redetermining applicant/client eligibility in a County Department of Social Services. This includes intake, processing, and review functions for a single income maintenance program; performing one of those functions for three or more programs; performing two or more functions in the Medicaid‑Long Term Care program; or serving as a lead worker for at least 25% of the time over Income Maintenance Caseworkers I.

The role requires performing intake, processing, and review in one of the following programs:
Food Stamps, Aid to Families with Dependent Children, Medicaid, or County Special Assistance. In the intake process, employees obtain family, financial, employment, and health data, verify information, and may conduct periodic redeterminations. Lead workers must be familiar with policies to correct errors identified during second‑party reviews.
Direct client contact, data verification, and eligibility determination. Decisions are subject to second or third‑party review. Employees represent the agency and are accountable for the impact on client welfare and agency compliance.
Interpersonal CommunicationsProvide clients with program requirements and rights, explain policies, and support lower level staff in complex cases. Clear communication with clients of varying understanding is essential.
Work EnvironmentFrequent interaction with agitated clients, heavy workload, and compressed deadlines. Clients may be verbally abusive but physical harm is rare.
Recruitment StandardsRequire substantial knowledge of program areas, general agency and community services, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to read, analyze, and interpret rules and regulations. Must communicate effectively with clients, community, and public officials. Ability to instruct lower level employees and perform casework within structured time frames.
Minimum Training and ExperienceOne year of experience as an Income Maintenance Caseworker or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
