Job Description & How to Apply Below

IonQ is developing the world’s most powerful full‑stack quantum computer based on trapped‑ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing.

We are looking for a Senior Manager of System Integration and Commissioning to lead teams of highly technical individuals delivering quantum computers to customers. Candidates for this role should have demonstrable experience taking complex systems through the entire design lifecycle from concept to manufacturing and operations. You should be experienced in identifying and implementing iterative design improvements for performance, with a specific focus on Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and Design for Test (DfT).

In this role, you will manage a multidisciplinary group of physicists and engineers to optimize and execute the final stages of quantum computer deliveries to internal and external customers. You will influence current and future system designs across the entire hardware and software lifecycle, improving quality, speed, and predictability of customer deliveries to support the company’s strategic revenue goals.

Responsibilities
  • Lead teams of physicists and engineers to deliver customer systems in support of company‑level objectives
  • Identify and drive design changes in current and future systems to improve the commissioning process
  • Align teams with industry best practices for installation and commissioning of customer systems
  • Develop requirements for next‑generation systems to drive operational improvements with the goal of simplifying the integration and commissioning process to be executed by non‑subject‑matter experts
  • Drive integration improvements to reduce cycle time through design optimization, automation, etc.
  • Manage multiple projects, priorities, deadlines, and deliverables
  • Collaborate and communicate with internal and external customers, engineers, physicists, and operations leadership
  • Work with cross‑functional leadership to create, influence, and align on department and organizational‑level goals and objectives
  • Manage costs and schedules across the operations program
  • Hire, develop, and retain top engineering and scientific talent
  • Lead root‑cause investigations to resolve highly complex or unique situations that impact system delivery or operations
  • Help define and manage key performance metrics for the team
  • Drive teams to execute independently from the development organization
Requirements

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, physics, or related field
  • 8+ years of hands‑on technical leadership and people‑management experience
  • Experience managing and mentoring engineers, physicists, or scientists ranging from early career to senior
  • Experience taking a complex product through the entire design lifecycle
  • Experience delivering complex products, including hardware and software, to customers
  • Demonstrated experience planning product deliveries in terms of cost, schedule, and labor resources
  • Experience identifying and driving corrective actions for design issues found in production systems
  • Strong written and oral communication demonstrated by the ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences
  • Prior experience managing managers

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 15+ years of technical leadership and people‑management experience
  • Direct experience in complex system integration, especially in validation and verification
  • Experience with free‑space optics and laser systems
  • Experience integrating electronics and software
  • Prior experience with quantum computing
  • Experience with modern scripting languages, like Python, Go, etc.
