Our team members are the heart of what makes us better. At Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) we help patients live better, healthier lives and support one another to succeed. This role provides support and assistance to Behavioral Health patients in the Emergency Department.
Responsibilities- Interact with identified patients to maintain a safe environment.
- Coordinate and communicate with security, nursing, medical, and mental health staff to provide safe patient care and receive instructions on which patients need assistance.
- Assist identified patients with Average Daily Living Skills (e.g., dressing/undressing), observe patient behavior, and listen to patient concerns.
- Report all untoward observations and changes in patient condition to the RN.
- Assist ED staff in maintaining a clean and safe workplace; identify potentially hazardous situations and notify appropriate staff; intervene with patients and visitors when needed.
- Provide information and direction to patients, guests, and team members; act as an ambassador for the hospital by setting a positive tone and solving problems through direct intervention or engagement with others.
- Under the direction of the Director of Mental Health or designee, assist in basic ED functions including supporting upset/bereaved/impaired patients and crowd control during surges; assist patient relations staff in the ED to resolve problems and complaints.
- Deliver excellent patient care and service, contributing to positive patient satisfaction scores.
- Understand and enforce hospital policies and procedures relevant to emergency room patient care; practice safety and ensure the safety and security of patients and staff at all times.
- Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and isolation procedures; perform hand hygiene before and after each patient contact.
- Adhere to HIPAA regulations regarding patient confidentiality.
- Communicate pertinent patient information to oncoming shifts; maintain a neat and orderly space with confidential material out of sight.
- Other duties and/or projects as assigned; adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Skills and Abilities
Required
- High School diploma, GED, or GED equivalent programs.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite).

- Associate’s Degree preferred
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Prior experience in Emergency Room setting or mental health preferred
Licenses And Certifications Required
- BLS required
Minimum rate of $17.24 hourly. HMH is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay at the time of posting and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.
