Summary:

The Vice President, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) serves as the site’s senior physician executive, responsible for clinical leadership, quality improvement, patient safety, and medical staff engagement. The CMO role focuses on high-quality, cost-effective, patient-centered care and alignment with Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) Network priorities. The position contributes to network initiatives, collaborates with hospital leadership, medical staff, community stakeholders, and HMH executives to improve clinical outcomes, operational performance, and physician alignment while addressing local healthcare needs.

Responsibilities
  • Clinical Leadership & Strategy
    • Develop and execute a clinical vision aligned with HMH goals to improve patient care and hospital performance, enhancing quality, safety, and efficiency.
    • Oversee clinical programs to meet local needs, aligning objectives with evidence-based practice, financial sustainability, and operational goals.
    • Foster collaboration among physicians, nurses, operations, and leaders to improve patient flow, care coordination, and service line integration.
    • Support expansion of key service lines in line with Network strategy.
    • Ensure alignment between hospital operations and HMH strategic goals.
    • Oversee physician leadership of clinical departments and medical staff (employed/contracted physicians).
    • Lead strategic planning for community services and the community service plan.
    • Oversee recruitment of contracted physicians.
    • Drive change management, teamwork, accountability, and professionalism; model hospital standards.
    • Collaborate with hospital leadership and the network to advance clinical initiatives.
  • Quality, Safety, Patient Care & Clinical Excellence
    • Lead hospital-wide quality improvement initiatives to improve outcomes, establish and monitor quality metrics, and promote patient safety.
    • Ensure regulatory compliance with CMS, Joint Commission, Leapfrog, and state standards.
    • Lead High Reliability and patient safety culture across the hospital.
    • Standardize care to reduce infections, readmissions, and errors; promote evidence-based medicine.
    • Improve patient satisfaction and engagement; drive value-based care while maintaining clinical standards.
    • Monitor KPIs and oversee peer review programs and performance improvement efforts.
    • Coordinate with department heads to improve workflows and clinical protocols.
  • Medical Staff Management & Physician Engagement
    • Act as primary liaison between administration and medical staff; promote engagement and collaboration.
    • Support governance, leadership, medical education, and quality initiatives within the organized medical staff.
    • Develop and maintain policies and bylaws governing medical staff operations; ensure regulatory compliance.
    • Oversee credentialing, peer review processes, delineation of clinical privileges, CME programs, and performance improvement.
    • Partner with Physician Enterprise on employed physician recruitment and contracts; recruit leaders and chairs as needed.
    • Foster collaboration among physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals; address physician concerns and burnout.
    • Provide oversight of the medical staff office and related services (utilization review, discharge planning, social services, case management).
    • Support CME activities and engagement across the medical staff; coordinate with Academic Affairs where applicable.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
    • Maintain full accreditation and regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal agencies.
    • Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to proactively manage risk and patient safety.
    • Lead accreditation efforts and readiness for inspections and audits; ensure HIPAA, CMS, and Joint Commission compliance.
    • Oversee clinical documentation, coding accuracy, and billing compliance.
    • Engage in emergency management planning as part of hospital readiness.
  • Financial & Operational Oversight
    • Collaborate with administration to optimize resource allocation, budgeting, cost control, and financial performance.
