The Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Research and Operations (CIWRO) Student Research Assistant will assist CIWRO and the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL) researchers with processing, quality controlling, and publishing imagery data from UAS based severe storm damage surveys. The Student Assistant will be expected to:
1) manually review imagery data for instances of personally identifiable information;
2) create publishable maps of data locations;
3) organize data to the structure fitting of publication; and
4) contribute to publication documentation. We will provide any required training to accomplish these tasks.
Position is located in the National Weather Center and the student must complete a U.S. Department of Commerce background check which takes a minimum of 30 days for clearance.
Required EducationMust be currently enrolled in the Spring 2026 term as a student at the University of Oklahoma in an undergraduate program. Hiring contingent upon verification of current student status.
Skills- Currently enrolled in the Spring 2026 semester in an undergraduate program
- Willingness to learn new technical skills and ask questions
- Strong organizational skills
- Preferred major within Atmospheric & Geographic Science, Data Science and Analytics, Geography, Computer Science or related field
- Linux
- arcGIS
- Scripting or programming experience (e.g., Python)
- Experience with imagery data
- Google suite
