Job Summary

Milner Library’s Scholarly Communication Unit is hiring an extra help Accessibility Assistant. The Scholarly Communication Unit supports and promotes research produced at Illinois State University and oversees the institutional repository, ISU ReD. The Accessibility Assistant will be responsible for remediating documents in ISU ReD to ensure digital accessibility.

This is a temporary extra help position for Spring/Summer 2026. Applicants must be available to work 20 hours per week. Hours are flexible.

Job Duties
  • Complete provided training on digital accessibility standards and tools
  • Remediate documents to meet accessibility standards using Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY Fine Reader, and other tools
  • Develop and apply alternative text to images in digital collections
  • Apply metadata to files and upload them to online platforms
  • Administer online crowdsource platform for generating manual transcripts of handwritten documents
  • Name and store files to a secure network according to strict conventions
  • May process images in Adobe Photoshop as needed

    Salary Rate / Pay Rate

    $20.00 per hour

    Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1 AA
  • Experience creating and editing accessibility tags in PDF documents
  • Experience using Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to read handwritten cursive documents
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in library and information science
  • Coursework in 19th and 20th century American history
  • Experience working in GLAMRs (galleries, libraries, archives, museums, or record centers)
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, production-oriented, and security-conscious environment
  • Work Hours

    Varies. Up to 28 hours per week.

    Functional Expectations

    Must be able to complete the following with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Remain at a workstation for extended periods.
  • Move about in various locations across campus as needed to complete day-to-day work.
  • Effectively communicate on a daily basis.
