Overview
Title: Police Telecommunicator

The function of the Police Telecommunicator (TC) is to receive, process, clarify, interpret, prioritize, and accurately disseminate information for the purpose of ensuring officer safety, saving the lives of endangered persons, reducing property losses, reducing the effects of injury, assisting in apprehending criminals, and rendering timely assistance to the general public. The TC provides the vital communication link between the citizens who need help and the various emergency services that can provide the necessary assistance.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities are implied by the job summary and related duties across sections, including the need to manage multiple information streams, prioritize responses, and maintain clear communication to support officer safety and public assistance.
Required Qualifications No record of conviction of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.High school diploma or equivalent.Preferred Qualifications
Must be able to work independently to meet the departmental mission and keep supervisors aware of ongoing situations while responding to multiple inquiries for information and assistance.Must present themselves and the department in a professional manner while not allowing personal emotions to influence behavior.Must be able to multi-task numerous time-sensitive tasks while providing services to many competing entities.Must be able to work in a fast-paced, highly stressful environment while adapting to changing priorities and assisting a diverse and often distraught clientele in a calm, efficient, and assistive manner.Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations.Knowledge of University Policies.Knowledge of ISU Police Dept. Policies.Knowledge of neighboring police department policies.Knowledge of LEADS rules and regulations.Knowledge of the geography of campus community buildings and offices.Knowledge of Campus Staff functions and jurisdiction.Knowledge of Campus parking lot locations and related regulations.Knowledge of Bloomington-Normal locations and emergency facilities.Ability to operate a radio console and multiple resources on 4-8 computer monitors and portable radios on two different radio systems.Must be knowledgeable of the proper use of 50 plus radio channels resources available.Ability to listen to multiple sources of information at once through selective listening. Must be able to distinguish what communications require action (Radio, Telephone, information on computer screen, etc.).Ability and knowledge to operate multiple line phone system (VoIP).Ability to monitor and respond to emergency calls.Knowledge of several University Systems for accessing necessary information and performing critical security functions, including university systems, email, video recording systems, system, Access control system, fire alarm system, emergency mass notification system, and Johnson Controls Inc. (JCI) alarms panic/hold up alarm systems.Ability to operate multiple computer systems critical to safety of officers and the University and surrounding community.Ability to maintain certifications LEADS, Sexual Assault Training, and First Aid.Ability to type; speak clearly and distinctly; good hearing with ability to listen to multiple communications.Maintain proper documentation both paper and computerized files and logs of communication.Must perform duties, make decisions, and generate responses with a special emphasis on officer safety.Speed and accuracy are a vital skill.Must be resourceful and able to communicate with a wide variety of people in the full spectrum of emotional distress.Ability to present a positive image to the public in often stressful situations.Multitasking is essential and having a thorough knowledge of all computer and paper filing systems is crucial; there are a variety of logs and records which are dependent upon the Police TC to keep accurate and up to date as they are legal documents.Work Hours
