Equipment Operator III; Storm Water
Overview
The City of Norfolk’s Department of Public Works seeks an Equipment Operator III for the Division of Environmental Storm Water Management. The role operates heavy construction equipment—including street sweepers, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, and backhoes—and performs routine maintenance of the city’s storm water infrastructure.
Hiring Salary RangeSalary: $46,794 – $49,133, plus a $5,000 CDL stipend.
Essential Functions- Operate heavy construction equipment such as front‑end loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, pick‑up trucks, vacuum trucks, and street sweepers.
- Transport workers, equipment, and construction material to and from job sites.
- Participate in routine functions of a maintenance crew.
- Perform maintenance on ponds and other BMPs, build and repair storm drains, clean ditches and drains, lay pipe, repair caves, and set catch basins.
- Provide supervision and support by performing on‑the‑job training and ensuring quality and safety standards are met.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Assist with loading and unloading equipment on job sites.
- Assist with cleaning work‑site areas and equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to heavy motorized equipment.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to read city maps.
- Normal hearing, peripheral and night vision, and depth perception.
Two years as an Equipment Operator or completion of a City apprenticeship program.
LicensesValid Commercial Driver’s License; a tanker endorsement may be required. Provide a Division of Motor Vehicle driving record from the last 30 days during the interview.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to lift up to 75 pounds, climb, stoop, and bend; work in hazardous areas and adverse weather; understand oral and written instructions; read city maps; have normal hearing, vision, and depth perception; and work long shifts during emergency weather conditions.
