Position: Pool Technician I
The General Services Facility Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and operational reliability of more than 250 City of Norfolk facilities, including public safety buildings, courts complexes, recreation centers, entertainment venues, the Virginia Zoo, and various municipal office buildings.

The Division includes specialized trades such as plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, roofing, and vertical transportation, along with skilled technicians responsible for pools, splash pads, and decorative fountains throughout the City. The Plumbing Section, based at Dana Street, supports aquatic facilities at recreation centers and outdoor public spaces to ensure compliance with State Health Department standards and the safety of citizens and staff.

The Department of General Services is seeking a qualified Pool Technician to support the Plumbing Section by maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing commercial swimming pools, splash pads, and decorative fountains located at recreation centers and outdoor public facilities throughout the City of Norfolk.

This position is responsible for maintaining proper water chemistry, ensuring compliance with Virginia Department of Health standards, servicing circulation and filtration systems, and performing mechanical and plumbing repairs associated with aquatic systems. The Pool Technician plays a critical role in public safety, regulatory compliance, and facility reliability.

* Monitor and maintain daily operation of commercial indoor and outdoor swimming pools, splash pads, and decorative fountains

* Perform water testing (chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid) and adjust chemical levels to maintain compliance with State Health Department regulations

* Calculate and dose chemicals appropriately based on pool volume and water test results

* Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair circulation pumps, motors, strainers, filters, heaters, chemical feed systems, and control panels

* Backwash and service sand, DE, and cartridge filtration systems as required

* Inspect and maintain chemical storage areas in accordance with safety standards and SDS requirements

* Perform seasonal start-up and winterization of outdoor aquatic facilities and fountains

* Diagnose and repair leaks in pool plumbing, valves, fittings, and underground lines

* Maintain splashpad recirculation systems and fountain mechanical components

* Coordinate with contractors and vendors for major repairs and equipment replacements

* Maintain accurate documentation of inspections, test logs, maintenance activities, labor hours, and materials in the work order management system

* Ensure pump rooms and mechanical areas remain clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards

* Respond to emergency service calls related to water quality, pump failure, or public safety concerns

* Educate recreation center personnel on basic operational procedures and reporting requirements

* Adhere to all OSHA, safety, and chemical handling requirements

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Required:

* One (1) year of experience.

Preferred Experience:

* Two (2) or more years of experience maintaining commercial pools or aquatic facilities

* Experience working with splash pads and decorative fountain systems

* Experience calculating chemical dosing for large-volume commercial pools

* Experience using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)

* Experience interpreting Virginia Department of Health regulations for public pools

Preferred Education

* Completion of vocational or technical training in plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical systems

* Associate degree in a technical or building trades field

Preferred Licenses/Certification:

* Certified Pool Operator (CPO)

* Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)

* Pool & Spa Operator Certification

* OSHA 10 or OSHA 30

* Virginia Tradesman License (Plumbing or Mechanical)

* First Aid / CPR Certification
