Job Description
BAE Systems is hiring Outside Machinists to support the Norfolk Ship Repair facility. The Outside Machinist Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving deck machinery, engine room work, general dock, rudders, shafting, propeller work, and testing. The Mechanic will have general knowledge of equipment operation for assembly, installation and testing; records work performed and follows specified safety policies and procedures.
This description outlines key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a mechanic in the Outside Machinist shop. A mechanic must demonstrate developing knowledge of the skills, knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these areas with minimal assistance. In some cases, the third class mechanic is expected to assist rather than complete the task independently.
Responsibilities- General Machinist Knowledge
- Use of measuring devices (rulers, micrometers, dial indicators, depth mics, scales, etc.)
- Use of trade hand tools
- Use of power tools (electric drills, saws, grinders, drill presses, etc.)
- Blueprints
- Read basic blueprints
- Customer Equipment
- Care and protection of customer equipment, including wrapping and protection with various materials (wood, plastic, rubber, etc.)
- Stationary and Portable Power Tool Operation (one of the following)
- Electrical
- Pneumatic
- Hydraulic
- Valve Overhaul
- Identify different valve types (safety valves, globe valves, gate valves, etc.)
- Understand applications of different valve types and associated systems
- Understand operation of valves
- Assist with removal and replacement
- Assist with repair and general overhaul
- Reach Rods/ Valve Operators
- Learn about different rods and valve operators
- Understand parts (rods, universal joint, hand wheels, etc.)
- Understand usage of reach rods and valve operators
- Assist with setting reach rods and valve operators up for operation
- Pump Overhaul
- Learn about pump overhauls and parts
- Assist with removal and installation
- Pump Alignments
- Basic knowledge about alignment processes (choose one of the following):
- Face and rim
- Indicator Revers method
- Magnetic coupling
- Laser
- Basic knowledge about alignment processes (choose one of the following):
- Deck Machinery
- Basic knowledge about deck machinery applications and parts, including:
- Anchor Windlass
- Sliding Pad Eye
- Boat Davit
- Capstans
- Assist with repair, cleaning, removal, and installation of deck machinery
- Basic knowledge about deck machinery applications and parts, including:
- Rudders
- Work with rudders and how they operate
- Understand rudder parts
- Assist with rudder removal and installation
- Shafting
- Know parts of a shaft (liners, journals, etc.)
- Assist with removal, installation and repairs of the shaft
- Line Shaft Bearings
- Knowledge of line shaft bearings
- Assist with removal, repair and installation of line shaft bearings
- Propellers
- Know differences between propeller types (Fixed and Variable Pitch)
- Knowledge of propeller parts
- Repair, removal, installation and testing of propellers
- Controllable Pitch Propeller Systems
- Familiarity with system operations and parts
- Assist with repair, installation and testing

Practical Theory Requirements
A mechanic must demonstrate knowledge of job planning and executing, proper tool selection, assisting helpers and handy persons with minimal supervision.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection)

Licenses/Certifications:
- Trained in all annual NAVSEA Standard Items (preferred)
