Job Duties

The Quantum Electronics Group (QEG) in the Department of Physics at Norfolk State University is seeking a postdoctoral associate with expertise in nonlinear and ultrafast optics, high power diode-pumped lasers, and laser spectroscopy of materials at cryogenic temperatures.

The successful candidate will conduct research on magneto-optics, low temperature and high magnetic field microscopy, and ultrafast two-color, pump-probe experiments on strongly correlated electron systems, topological insulators, 2D materials, thin films, nonlinear optical crystals and quantum devices incorporating some of these materials. The laser facilities include: a 5W Solstice regenerative amplifier, two Topas Prime/NIRUV OPA's, Mai Tai fs laser, a Quantum Design Opti Cool cryostat 4k-300K range with a magnetic field up to 7 T, and related optics and electronics.

The materials and devices studied will be fabricated in the NSU Crystal Physics and Quantum Electronics Laboratory and in the NSU-Micron Class
100/1000 Cleanroom, both located in the McDemmond Center for Applied Research on the NSU campus. Some of the facilities include, single crystal floating zone growth, Bridgman crystal growth stations, a 14T, 50 mK Quantum Dynamics PPMS, a low temperature XRD, a Laue back scattering, and state-of-the-art cleanroom fabrication systems.

The appointment is for 2 years if hired by September 2025.

Minimum Qualifications

The candidate must have a PhD degree in physics, optical engineering, or similar discipline related to research. The applicant must also show an interest and ability to communicate and mentor a diverse student body of undergraduate and graduate students, work in close collaboration with members of the Quantum Electronics Group and have the initiative and capability to work independently.
