Litter & Sanitation Technician,
Job Description:
Participates in the Litter & Sanitation Services mission support program to enhance aesthetics of campus grounds and infrastructure through public sanitation and waste management. Represent yourself in a professional manner to the department, the community, and to outside groups.
- Perform litter collection, public sanitation, and waste management tasks in support of campus grounds and infrastructure.
- Maintain safety and professionalism in interactions with the department, community, and external groups.
- Basic knowledge of proper sanitation and waste management practices, including personal safety, litter collection, small power tool use, small hand-tool use, some hazardous material disposal, public health, pressure washing, and street sweeping.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and their safe usage.
- Basic mechanical knowledge to recognize malfunctions of equipment.
- Basic knowledge of pressure washing and chemical use for sanitary purposes.
- Basic knowledge of seasonal services such as snow/ice removal, leaf collection, storm water mitigation, storm clean-up, and familiarity with equipment related to these services.
- Basic knowledge of vermin and insect activity with some knowledge of mitigation strategies.
- Basic knowledge of public litter collection and outdoor events.
- Basic skill in the operation of a variety of grounds maintenance related hand tools and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to work in extreme heat or cold; to lift/move/carry 50 pounds many times per week.
- Demonstrated ability to read, write, and use a computer; demonstrated ability to work independently or with others.
- Valid driver's license and insurable driving record which must be maintained.
- Demonstrate the ability to acquire a valid Aerial Lift Operator's Certification within 1 year of employment.
Some experience in a horticulture related field of service.
Level and type of experience- Basic Litter & Sanitation or Waste & Recycling collection and disposal.
- Prior experience using hand tools, cleaning chemicals, and operating pressure washers related to the cleaning of structures and infrastructure.
- Some experience using chainsaws.
- Some years of on-the-job and/or vocational training in Litter & Sanitation.
- VDACS Commercial Pesticide Applicator license in any category, and/or specifically in public health.
- Aerial Lift Operator's Certification.
- Some experience operating a street sweeper or refuse collection vacuum.
- OSHA training in general industry.
- Some experience working in a public or commercial campus setting.
- Some experience working with stormwater management, emergency response, and/or other types of weather-related response situations.
