Overview

Registered Nurse (RN)

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, located in Norfolk, Virginia, is a leading community partner providing acute, residential, and Partial Hospitalization treatment for children and teens exhibiting behavioral and/or mental health concerns. The hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. All employees are required to be fully vaccinated per CDC guidelines.

Position scope:
The Registered Nurse is responsible for planning, directing, implementing, and evaluating all aspects of nursing care on the assigned unit for residents and patients. Adheres to Nursing Standards and Policies, Facility Policies and Procedures, and the Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for nursing care based on the nursing process and in compliance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Monitor, report, and document the residents’/patients’ behavior and physiological status.
  • Administer medications and perform treatments/procedures in compliance with facility and nursing services policies and procedures.
  • Guide the response to residents who are behaviorally out of control or who may be experiencing a medical or behavioral crisis in collaboration with the Director of Nursing, Medical Staff with delineated privileges, and Physician.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence in the delivery of direct patient care and the implementation of the milieu management program.
  • Report accurately and concisely to oncoming shifts regarding conditions of residents medically and psychiatrically.
Qualifications
  • Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia or compact authority as a Registered Nurse.
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program with active licensure and registration by the Virginia Board of Nurse Examiners;
    Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse providing clinical care; 1+ years preferred, with behavioral health experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of general addictions and psychiatric nursing process, therapeutic relationships, age-specific growth and development, and crisis and behavior management preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient in computer systems and software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of Joint Commission/CMS requirements and state/federal regulatory requirements preferred.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with minimum supervision and take initiative in urgent matters.
  • CPR certification required.
