Overview
BAE Systems is hiring Outside Machinists to support the Norfolk Ship Repair facility.
Responsibilities- The Outside Machinist Mechanic performs a variety of skilled mechanical duties involving deck machinery, engine room work, general dock, rudders, shafting, propeller work, and testing.
- Demonstrate general knowledge of equipment operation for assembly, installation and testing; record work performed and follow specified safety policies and procedures.
- Developing knowledge means understanding how to perform tasks in the listed categories and completing them with minimal assistance; the mechanic may assist or perform tasks independently as specified.
- Assist with repair, cleaning, removal, and installation of deck machinery; work with rudders, shafting, line shaft bearings, and propellers; assist with testing and alignments as required.

Care and protection of customer equipment - Stationary and Portable Power Tool Operation (Electrical, Pneumatic, or Hydraulic)
- Valve Overhaul:

Parts and setup - Pump Overhaul and Alignments:
Removal, installation and alignment basics - Deck Machinery:
Roles and components (Anchor Windlass, Sliding Pad Eye, Boat Davit, Capstans) - Rudders, Shafting, Line Shaft Bearings, Propellers, Controllable Pitch Propeller Systems:
Operation, parts, repair, installation, and testing
- Education Minimum:
High School Diploma/GED - Minimum Relevant
Experience:
3 to 5 years - Practical Theory:
Knowledge of job planning, proper tool selection, assisting helpers with minimal supervision
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
- Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure
- Must be able to wear applicable PPE (Hard hat, safety goggles, gloves, steel toes shoes, ear protection)
- Education Preferred:
High School Diploma/GED - Preferred Relevant
Experience:
3 to 5 years
- Trained in all annual NAVSEA Standard Items (preferred)
- General knowledge of ship systems; distilling plants, steam plant, diesel plant, hydraulics systems
- Understanding of naval vessel compartments, number systems and vessel terminology for CG, DDG, and LHD ships (preferred)
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your wages.
