Position: Crew Leader I - Pump Stations

The Department of Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Crew Leader I in the Wastewater Division. The role involves leading a crew of maintenance workers, equipment operators, and other employees in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the wastewater system, as well as investigating and resolving complaints and generating maintenance reports for efficiency planning.

Essential Functions
  • Directs and leads a crew involved in the installation, repair, cleaning and maintenance of the wastewater collection system, including manholes, gravity mains, and force mains.
  • Maintains time, equipment and materials used to prepare reports.
  • Instructs crew on proper safety standards and work expectations.
  • Transports crew to work sites.
  • Climbs ladders and stairs; bends, pushes, pulls, stoops, and lifts up to 75 lbs.; stands for extended periods of time; confined space entry also required.
  • Requires the ability to operate a standard transmission vehicle.
  • Valid driver's license required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two years of supervisory experience in a maintenance role highly preferred.
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Knowledge of basic operational or technical processes related to wastewater systems.
Additional Information & Requirements
  • Work hours:

    Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; standby duty rotation required.
  • Work location:

    Combined Operations Center, 1316 Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk.
  • One-time $5,000 signing bonus is available.
  • Position is designated as an 'Essential' position; may require extended, rotating, after‑hours, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
