General Dynamics NASSCO (Marine Systems) is seeking a Sheet Metal Handyman to work in Norfolk, Virginia. The role is full‑time, covering a Monday‑Sunday schedule from 0600 to 1445, with all shifts filled. No security clearance is required.
Principal Responsibilities- Ensure that a WAF (Work Authorization Form) is present on the job site and matches the specific task being performed.
- Verify that all safety issues pertinent to the task are addressed (e.g., special staging, face shields, protective clothing, breathing apparatus).
- Confirm that the employee and any subordinates are trained and qualified for the assigned work, including JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, and special electrical/mechanical repairs.
- Maintain safety, productivity, and quality control at all times.
- Ensure the job site is left safe and clean before departure.
- Complete assignments under supervision as directed.
- Report to the Sheet Metal Shop Foreman or General Foreman.
- Set up and break down equipment, assist journeymen with hose handling, and operate power tools.
- Perform semi‑skilled tasks within the trade; check out, deliver, return, and care for required tools.
- Identify and use trade equipment; perform preventive maintenance (lubrication, fluid checks, minor adjustments).
- Organize stockrooms and staging areas; maintain order.
- Practice good housekeeping and hazard‑free work environments.
- Follow policies and procedures, including timekeeping.
- Understand emergency and evacuation procedures; know muster locations.
- Work well with others and understand written and verbal instructions in English.
- Perform job safely, recognizing and avoiding potential hazards.
- Know appropriate personal protective equipment and when to use it.
- Navigate a ship and understand compartment designation, where applicable.
- Basic mathematics skills.
- Reliable transportation; able to work aboard vessels, climb ladders, and enter tanks and confined spaces.
- Work evenings and weekends; may require up to 30% travel.
- Carry, lift, and pull objects up to 50 lbs.
- Walk, climb, and stand for extended periods (approx. 75% of shift).
- Work in tight, confined spaces; tolerate varied temperatures, wind, moisture, and chemical exposures.
- Maintain finger dexterity, eye/hand/foot coordination, and hearing for tool operation.
