Position: Mental Health Technician - MH/BH (11:00PM- 7:30AM)

Mental Health Technician – Schedule 11:00PM‑7:30AM

Join Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health in Norfolk, VA for a full‑time 3 pm‑11 pm shift. The role supports children and teens in residential and partial‑hospitalization treatment.

Responsibilities

The Mental Health Technician serves as a role model for patients/residents, ensures a safe environment, and collaborates with the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Duties/Scope of Work
  • Read and interpret treatment plans; develop strategies to teach acceptable behaviors.
  • Develop and facilitate group sessions aligned with individual treatment goals.
  • Observe and accurately record patient behaviors; write progress notes and communicate with the treatment team.
  • Assist with behavior management and crisis intervention using appropriate techniques.
  • Utilize communication mechanisms among staff (shift reports, team logs, staff meetings).
  • Support facility staffing needs across residential, acute, or PHP populations.
  • Conduct continuous rounding to assess and monitor patients per doctor’s orders and milieu.
  • Maintain consistent service delivery with respect, appropriate communication, and appropriate boundaries.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • In lieu of a degree, 2+ years of experience working directly with children in a therapeutic setting.
  • In lieu of a degree, QMHP‑C certification and no experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to de‑escalate situations with patients.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Working knowledge of behavior management.
  • Broad knowledge of common mental health diagnoses (e.g., Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis, ADHD, Bipolar, Suicide).
Preferred Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Early Childhood Education, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • QMHP‑C certification.
  • 4+ years of child and adolescent in‑patient (residential or acute) psychiatry.
