Position: CERTIFIED RECREATIONAL THERAPIST

Recreation Therapist (CTRS) – Therapeutic Consultation (VA DD Waiver)

Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health is a 82‑bed facility located in Norfolk, Virginia. It offers comprehensive mental health programs and is accredited by The Joint Commission. The center provides psychiatrically and medically managed acute, residential treatment, and partial hospitalization for children and adolescents.

About the Facility

Founded in 1986, the center is a Universal Health Services facility that focuses on evidence‑based practice treatments to support the social and emotional development of its patients.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a role model for patients/residents, demonstrating socially effective valuesოც attitudes, and behaviors.
  • Plan and facilitate therapeutic groups and individual activity therapy programs tailored to each patient’s Treatment Plan.
  • Ensure a safe environment and maintain a positive, normative culture throughout the facility.
  • Develop activity therapy programs and maintain coordination with direct care staff.
  • Provide ongoing activity therapy services and maintain professional/medical staff communication.
  • Uphold employer‑employee relations and deliver service excellence at all times.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge: Principles and practice of Therapeutic Recreation, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, or Occupational Therapy; behavior management; crisis management; current CPR certification.
  • Education: Undergraduate degree in one of the above fields from an accredited institution; current certification or registration required.
  • Licensure/Certification: CTRS or equivalent license.
  • Experience: Prior work with children and adolescents in residential or psychiatric settings; experience in a residential treatment or psychiatric environment is preferred.
  • Supervision: Supervision provided by the Director of Education or designee; students allowed under approved supervision.
  • Additional Requirements: Valid driver’s license; ability to operate a 15‑passenger van; willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand, squat, kneel, sit, and lie on the floor for extended periods.
  • Climb, run, and walk for extended periods; lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Capability to verbally de‑escalate and physically restrain patients/residents when necessary.
  • Perform CPR as required.
