Norfolk Police Department (NPD) has a rich history of safeguarding lives and property, preventing and investigating crime, and maintaining peace for the City of Norfolk. The department was established in 1797, covers 66 square miles, and protects over 244,000 residents.
Effective 10/04/2025 pay is $61,200.00 - $73,076.00 based on years of experience. Currently accepting applications for:

- Virginia Certified Police Officers — participate in a 5-7 week academy training program at the Norfolk Police Department Training Center. Training covers all necessary DCJS and NPD requirements.
- Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States — participate in an 8 week academy training program covering legal, firearms, driving, and defensive tactics.
- Virginia In-State Jailor/Sheriff Deputy — participate in a 25-26 week academy training program to complete Virginia state certified police officer training, including classroom, physical fitness, and police situation simulation.
- Enforce state and local laws.
- Patrol duties and respond to calls for service.
- Protect life and property and preserve constitutional rights.
- Conduct criminal and traffic investigations, field interviews, serve warrants, subpoenas and other court papers.
- Issue summons, make arrests, monitor for dangerous situations, and take appropriate action.
- Provide assistance and information to the public and assist in prosecution of offenders; maintain administrative requirements and public information.
- Meet the physical requirements and tests prescribed by the City’s Civil Service Commission.
- Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
Knowledge level: equivalent to four years of high school or equivalent.
Virginia Certified Police Officers
- Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy.
- DCJS certification.
- One (1) year of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer for a municipal, county, or state agency.
- Currently employed as a certified patrol officer, or separated no more than twelve (12) months.
Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States
- Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy.
- DCJS certification.
- Three (3) years of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer for a municipal, county, or state agency.
- Currently employed as a certified patrol officer, or separated no more than twenty-four (24) months.
Virginia In-State Jailor/Sheriff Deputy
- Graduation from a DCJS approved basic Jailor Academy.
- Jailor certification.
- One (1) year of consecutive active service as a Jailor/Deputy Sheriff in Virginia.
- Valid Driver’s License (prior to employment start date).
- U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized).
- Must successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.
All copies of certifications and licenses must be attached to your application

- Recent DMV report from the licensing state showing driving history. Report must be complete.
- Completed Authorization for Release of Information Form, via the provided link. Notarized.

- High school diploma or GED; higher education diploma acceptable.
- DD 214 long form with discharge information (prior military).
- Completed Military Waiver Form, via the provided link, if applicable (prior military).
- Completed W2 Exemption Form Revised 5.04 via the provided link (DCJS).
- Birth Certificate or valid U.S. Passport for proof of citizenship. See notes if not born in the U.S.
- Criminal conduct: drunk driving or DUI within three years; hit and run (injury or property) within three years; offenses involving moral turpitude, including embezzlement, perjury, or larceny within three years.
