The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Chief Waterworks Operator. This person oversees the operation of a shift at one of two water treatment plants and associated transmission systems. Monitors the quality of water, plans changes in water flows, maintains facilities, and directs work assignments of staff.
Essential Functions- Monitors the quality of water by performing chemical and physical analysis of water, performing inspections on water treatment equipment, and making adjustments as needed.
- Maintains the proper raw water flows. Calculates chemical machine settings, makes changes to machine settings, and adjusts pumpage of various flows.
- Attends meetings, conducts employee evaluations, and resolves issues.
- Operates monitors and performs maintenance on equipment and facilities by documenting operations, performing calculations, reporting equipment problems to maintenance, and assisting with minor maintenance and repairs.
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months to one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, and technical or correspondence schools are likely sources.
Two (2) years experience as a Class I Operator.
Valid Driver's License. Class I Virginia Waterworks Operator License.
Work Hours3 days on 3 days off; 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. (hours subject to change).
Work Location6040 Waterworks Road, Norfolk, Virginia 23502 as needed; you may be required to work at 3719 Parker Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia 23508.
This position is designated as an “Essential” position and you may be required to work extended, rotating, on call, nights, weekends, and/or holidays in response to emergencies or severe weather.
