Position Summary
Norfolk State University’s Department of English and Foreign Languages invites applicants for a tenure‑track/tenured appointment as Department Chair, a 12‑month position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of English, African American Literature/Sociolinguistics, beginning July 1, 2026. Application review begins March 15, 2026 and the position remains open until filled.
Department OverviewThe Department of English and Foreign Languages offers programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Secondary Education Endorsement, and a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Creative Writing Concentration. Faculty publish creative writing and literary analysis, lead study abroad programs to London, maintain a local chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, host the William Carroll Writers’ Festival, and collaborate with departments such as Fine Arts on presentations.
Courses in French, Spanish, and Public Speaking form part of the general education requirement. The department seeks candidates who demonstrate a commitment to improving access to higher education for all students.
- Administer the business and academic processes that serve a large, vibrant department composed of full‑time and part‑time faculty teaching in the English major and the General Education core.
- Engage actively in the College of Liberal Arts’ academic, creative, and strategic initiatives to align the department with the university mission of whole‑student learning and growth, and contribute to program and curriculum development inside and outside the department.
- Advise and mentor students, participate in recruitment activities, and take part in ongoing program review, assessment, and accreditation activities, including alignment of the English BA and department General Education offerings with institutional retention, graduation, and workforce placement goals.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Ed.Ds will not be considered.
- Facility with digitally integrated systems for higher‑education management and administration.
- Experience and commitment to fostering excellence in teaching and scholarly activity at the university level across the breadth of the discipline, with interest in interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse student body, both verbally and in writing.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
