Adjunct Professor
Overview
Brackish Experts is seeking Adjunct Professors to teach the Strategy and War (S&W) course for the Naval War College’s College of Distance Education Fleet Seminar Program (FSP) in Norfolk, VA. FSP is a seminar-based curriculum taught in-person to students at Naval bases and stations and consists of one 3-hour class per week during the academic year (September through May).
Course DescriptionThe S&W course prepares Naval War College students to successfully operate in and interact between military and political elements of national security at the strategic and operational levels. It adopts an interdisciplinary approach to strategy, drawing on the disciplines of history, political science, international relations, and economics. It integrates, with those academic perspectives, critical military factors from the profession of arms such as doctrine, weaponry, training, technology, and logistics.
The result is a coherent frame of reference to analyze complex strategic problems and formulate strategies to address them.
Adjunct Faculty
Qualifications:
Required qualifications include an advanced degree in one or more of the following areas:
History, International Affairs, International Relations, Political Science, or a related field; teaching experience at the graduate level; a U.S. citizen and capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense Secret security clearance. Preferred qualifications include: an earned Ph.D. in one of the academic fields noted above; familiarity with national security and defense environments; graduation from a U.S. military senior- or intermediate-level Service College and JPME I and/or II certification;
Naval War College or other military Service College teaching experience at the graduate level; experience and competence in internet-based instruction; and distance learning experience at the graduate level.
Adjunct Faculty Functions: Teach the S&W course at the Intermediate Service College level with duties including: conducting classroom and online instruction; reviewing and evaluating student essays, examinations, and other written and verbal assessments; developing curricula; performing various types of service to the College; traveling to, and lecturing at, nonresident seminars around the country as required; and performing educational administrative functions as required.
New adjunct professors can expect to:
- Serve as an Associate Fleet Professor in early 2026 to observe the course being taught by current Adjunct Professors to gain familiarity with the curriculum and learning management system of record. Associate Fleet Professor is a paid position.
- Participate in a faculty development workshop in the summer of 2026. The workshop is a paid event.
- Teach the S&W course as an Adjunct Professor starting Academic Year (September 2026-May 2027). The course consists of one 3-hour, in-person, class each week throughout the academic year. Adjunct Professor is a paid position.
