OverviewThe Art Department at Old Dominion University invites applications for an annual, 10-month position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in July 25, 2026
. This is a tenure track appointment with a 2/3 teaching load
. We are particularly looking for an Assistant Professor specialized in contemporary art education for K-12 public school settings for this tenure track position. In addition to teaching foundations and methods courses, this Assistant Professor will engage in research and work with the College of Education and the public-school districts to advise students, administer, facilitate, and oversee practicums and student teaching experiences, among other service activities.
We welcome candidates whose lived experience, creative practice, research and/or teaching centers on historically underrepresented communities or marginalized practices in a way that would enhance learning experiences for our diverse student population.
This is a full time, 2/3 teaching load with course reductions given for student teaching internship supervision. Primary responsibilities will include:
- Teach regularly scheduled classes which could include Foundations in Art Education, Elementary and/or Secondary methods, and Curriculum and Instruction.
- Coordinate, supervise, and manage student teaching observations, practicums, and student teaching internships.
- Serve as a liaison between the Old Dominion University Art Department, the Darden College of Education and the local school districts.
- Implement sequential objectives in lesson planning, writing and studio practice throughout the sequence of the Art Education core curriculum.
- The successful candidate will work with the Art Department chair and Art Education program director to align curricular goals, and oversee teacher supervision in compliance with state and national accreditation standards.
- Advise students, maintain a robust research program and perform department service responsibilities.

- A completed B.F.A. and/or M.F.A.
- Teaching certification.
- Knowledgeable on current issues and trends in art education.
- Accomplished studio practice experience and/or exhibition record.
- Experience in elementary and secondary Art Education in public schools.
- Demonstrated experience with service-learning activities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience in managing and facilitating programming in the arts for children and youth.
- Experience with contemporary media and digital technologies.
- Experience teaching/working with students with special needs in an art setting.
