Overview

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) and the Department of Ocean and Earth Sciences (OES) in the College of Sciences (CoS) at Old Dominion University (ODU) invite applications for a tenure‑track associate/full professor position in future sea level rise (SLR) and its uncertainty, starting in Fall 2026. This is a 10‑month appointment.

The position is part of ODU’s Centennial Faculty Hire initiative and will play an important role in advancing ODU’s strategic vision to address global challenges associated with SLR and natural hazards. The faculty member is expected to develop transdisciplinary research, education, and outreach programs that integrate understanding of relative and global SLR, spatial modeling, and coastal engineering solutions applied to coastal resilience.

The role will foster connections across ODU’s colleges and departments dealing with various aspects of coastal resilience in the face of sea level change.

Responsibilities

Develop research programs producing modeling products and simulated projections of changing sea level on local, regional, national, and global scales at decadal time scales. These products should be robust, of high spatial resolution, and relevant for developing effective public policies on coastal adaptation and mitigation, coastal conservation, and resilience, particularly for the U.S. East Coast. The successful candidate will also integrate their research with graduate and undergraduate instruction, pursue interdisciplinary collaborations, and engage in outreach activities to inform stakeholders and the public about SLR uncertainties and implications.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in geology, civil engineering, oceanography, or an equivalent engineering or science discipline.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses in civil engineering, oceanography, environmental modeling, or data analysis.
  • Must have a performance record that would merit an appointment with tenure.
  • A demonstrated record of research funding and publications applied to oceanic and climatic resilience.
  • Experience as a mentor and/or supervisor for graduate students.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience mentoring postdoctoral researchers and pre‑tenured faculty.
    • Able to develop and lead interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research groups.
