Overview

The Old Dominion University Department of Human Movement Studies and Special Education invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Special Education (tenure-track position) to start in Fall, 2026
. This is part of a Cluster Hire focusing on the interdisciplinary area of community health and resilience, specifically addressing the needs of people with disabilities and other socially vulnerable populations. The program emphasizes building healthy and resilient communities that meet the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families, requiring skills and knowledge in education, communication, and health-care needs. Early childhood special education and PK-12 settings that promote resilience help mitigate potential negative outcomes related to hazards, disasters, and other stressors.

Position

and Duties

The Special Education program offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including teacher licensure and a Ph.D. program. Job responsibilities encompass teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will teach special education courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and/or doctoral level using a variety of delivery options (on-campus, synchronous web-conferencing, synchronous and asynchronous online). The role includes engagement in scholarly research and writing, pursuit of external funding, and participation in service activities supporting the University, community, and profession.

The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and participation in program decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A doctoral degree in Special Education or a closely related field; ABD candidates with expected completion by July 15, 2026 will also be considered.
  • A doctoral degree in Special Education or a closely related field (ABD with a completion date prior to July 15, 2026 considered).
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity and expertise in interdisciplinary work bridging school, community public service, and health care support for children with disabilities.
  • Teaching experience in Early Childhood Special Education and/or PK-12 settings with diverse cultural, linguistic, and ethnic groups, including settings that serve students with and without disabilities.
  • Strong verbal, written, and technology skills.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • Record of peer-reviewed publications in recognized journals and a record of grant procurement.
    • University teaching experience in special education, including online instruction and effective integration of technology in the instructional process.
    • Research interest on the role of PreK-12 students with disabilities and their families in maintaining healthy and resilient communities.
