Job DescriptionTidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024‑25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.
The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024‑2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4‑year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled ’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
This part‑time position provides customer service support to library users at the TCC Norfolk Library.
Functional ResponsibilitiesThe Circulation and Reference Assistant staffs the circulation desk and reference service points; answers phones; performs circulation duties, such as checking books and materials in and out, pulling holds, checking missing lists, calling patrons when holds come in; answers directional questions and refers reference questions to the reference desk; troubleshoots, maintains, and assists with the operation of PCs, printers, copiers, and scanners;
helps with shelving and shelf maintenance, including shelf reading, weeding, and shifting of books; participates in professional development and training opportunities; performs other job‑related duties as assigned; provides reference assistance by interviewing patrons to determine their information needs and instructing them on how and where to find and use needed resources, including the online catalog, electronic resources, and the Internet;
records and maintains reference statistics; understands, applies, and explains library and college policies and procedures; assists with special projects.
- Basic knowledge of library circulation and reference practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse public.
- Ability to use library databases, electronic library resources, and the Internet for research.
- Ability to operate office, library, and media equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
- Ability to have some flexibility in work schedule. Knowledge of and skill in using Microsoft Office, e‑mail, Internet, Blackboard and other computer applications.
- Ability to organize, work with details, and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to patrons and enforce library policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of standard library operations and circulation procedures.
- Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system.
- Experience using an automated library catalog to locate library materials.
- Experience in using electronic library resources and the Internet.
- Experience providing technical and software assistance.
- Customer service experience.
